Antibody-mediated autoimmune encephalitis: A practical approach

Antibody-mediated autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a heterogeneous group of inflammatory central nervous system disorders. Symptoms typically include subacute, progressive neuropsychiatric symptoms with associated cognitive dysfunction, movement disorders, and seizures. The diagnosis should be based on objective neurologic dysfunction in combination auto antibody testing. Treatment immunotherapies requires both short-term long-term strategies depending the specific syndrome potential for relapse. In this paper, we review key features AE, focusing syndromes involving cell surface synaptic proteins, share practical approach to management, including common pitfalls nonspecific findings.
